About Sunset Cruise- The Story of Taarab Music
Tour participants will learn of the socio-cultural impact of Taraab, introduced in the late nineteenth century by the reigning Omani Sultan Seyyid Barghash (1836-1888). Inspired by the Egyptian musical ensembles, the Sultan facilitated Zanzibari musicians being taught Arabic Taraab. Evolving over the course of time to fuse elements of Swahili, Arabic, and Indian influences, eventually becoming the cultural embodiment of East Africa's coastal strip. Join the cruise to learn of the story of Taraab and hear sounds from the past. An oral history will be presented, along with musical accompaniment depicting its journey.
